Rue Cler — Antique Show and More (Gourmet)
Searching for silver, fine china, goblets of Baccarat, antique necklaces, old framed art pieces and other fine brocante pieces? The next fabulous antique and brocante show will be on Rue Cler in the upper-crust 7th Arrondissement of Paris, on May 12and 13th. Nearly 100 antique and brocante vendors will be lined up near the Ecole Militaire metro. Who knows what treasures you might find here, but you are guaranteed to find some excellent artifacts without having to go all the way to Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen.
Rue Cler, of course, is one of the most fashionable gourmet shopping streets in Paris, where Julia Child would shop when she lived in Paris and studied at Le Cordon Bleu. Just a few blocks away from the Eiffel Tower, Ecole Militaire and Champs de Mars, it is just a simply charming place to buy cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables, or gaze at a boucherie or poissonerie.
It is also a perfect place to shop for gourmet items, including patisserie, baguette, foie gras, cheese and wine. Some of our favorite merchantes are located here. Jeusselin sells the best foie gras in Paris, and you can also buy other prepared items such as roasted potatoes or gratin daphinois (like scalloped potatoes, but better). Next door is Nicolas, vendor of wines and champagne. Nearby, La Fromagerie and Marie Ann Cantin offer fresh cheeses and a few quality vegetable and fruit stands also line the block. Rue Cler is also home to Roger, one of the best boucherie in Paris, with a poissonerie , where fresh oysters, lobster (live or cooked), and shrimp – including prepared platters – can be sold with some notice. And, of course, don’t miss out on Amarino, one of the best gelato places in Paris to make you feel like you are in Florence!
If you are hungry, you can have lunch or a snack at one of my favorite chic restaurants with terrace seating, Tribeca, which offers reliable pizza, pasta, burgers and good wine at a real value.
