Terminus Nord Brasserie

When I asked my French colleague if he could recommend a good brasserie with quality steak he did not hesitate: ‘’Terminus Nord.’’ Located across from Gare du Nord, it would not be on my shortlist of destinations, in part due to its location, but as we were meeting our dear friends from D.C. who were catching a train from Gare du Nord to London, it was the perfect location for a rendez-vous.

Since Terminus Nord is used to serving patrons that are on a schedule, you can dine in and out in as short as an hour, though it is better to give yourself at least an hour and half if you want to enjoy your meal. With fresh oysters and other shellfish available on iced platters, this old brasserie has all the standards, including crêpes suzettes (flambéed tableside), baba au rhum, steak au poivre, poulet rôti (roasted chicken), foie gras (both hot and cold) and soupe à l’oignon gratinée . The restaurant itself has been serving diners since the 1920s and has changed little over the years – it has beautiful mirrors, wall-paintings, bulbed lamps and gleaming brass and mirrors shining throughout.

I had foie gras poêlé (seared), which was quite good and at a price of under 15€, a real bargain. The entrecôte was also surprisingly good – affirming my colleague’s recommendation that this is the place for good steak. It also makes one of the best mi-cuit in Paris.

The restaurant is great for children as it is convivial and easy-going, and even has a children’s menu. Also, can you dine in relatively short fashion, with no dress code for the kiddies (or adults).

Terminus Nord is a French institution, adhering to the fine brasseries that offer great service at good value in a beautiful setting. Best for that day or evening when you are catching a train to or from Gare du Nord, plan accordingly to build some time in for a surprisingly good meal or snack.

The restaurant is open seven days a week, from 8:00 am for breakfast until 1:00 a.m. for a late dinner. You can also make reservations online.
