Pâtisserie Viennoise

Down a hidden side street just off the main tourist area around St. Michel is a tiny, unremarkable shop front that is simply labeled Pâtisserie Viennoise (Viennese Pâtisserie). All that can be seen in the small window is row upon row of satisfying home-baked goods –upon entering, you are faced with even more.

Inside, the atmosphere is lively, and packed. There is often a small queue for a coveted seat in their cosy eating area, yet once in, the wait is worth it. Their menu is extensive, ranging from simple soups & salads to plates of pasta, all for a very reasonable price.

Though everything looks so tasty, undoubtedly the most exciting thing here is the cake. And for around a mere 3€, you don’t get a small, dainty creation, but a giant slab of sweetness that has clearly been made with love continuing to attract the same people year after year. Alongside the usual French pastries and cakes appear some more unusual Viennese treats – tortes, tarts and strudels. The cinnamon and almond tart is a particular favourite of mine. It is hard to choose your indulgence, but bearing in mind the low prices, (which are rare in Paris) you could easily splash out on two. They also run a take-away service, so why not take one home as well!?
