Cassiopée (Antiquités-Brocante)

IMGP3285.JPGHidden in a quiet little courtyard off rue Saint-Paul in the Marais, is this gem of an antique shop that specializes in arts de la table (fine silver, china and crystal glass).  Throughout Paris you can find antiquités and brocante stores, including boutiques that specialize in selling antique silver, but Cassiopée is special for its collection of Baccarat glassware, much of it going back to the early 1900s, if not earlier, as well as its classic argenterie (silver).  You are guaranteed to find top-quality pieces, at prices that are of extraordinary value given their time period and stellar condition.

You can find unique champagne buckets, silver pieces by Christofle and other top-quality silversmiths, glassware by Baccarat, stunning crystal carafes, beautiful champagne pieces from the 1930s, and other tableware and pieces of art.  On one occasion my wife bought a gorgeous pure silver dessous, which is a little round tray that sits under a wine bottle when serving at the table.  On our latest visit we bought a gorgeous 1935 Argentine Baccarat carafe,  a unique time period piece we will treasure forever.

Cassiopée is a family affair, and the owners, a delightful couple who always greet you with a smile, are extremely knowledgeable and aptly proud of their collection.  They can speak English but if you can get by in French, even poor French, it is always nice to try.

Cassiopée remains one of our favorite spots to shop for a unique gift for a friend or to browse and simply absorb the splendor of this unique and timeless store.  Great for Sunday shopping, it is one of the few places open on a Sunday afternoon.
