La Cantoche Paname

When was the last time you ate a top-notch meal surrounded by jars of Nutella, South Park figurines, Kermit the Frog, or works of art made up entirely of Smarties that was not in your own apartment? Or hopscotched into a restaurant?

Located in the heart of the 2nd arrondissement and captained by Chef Predrag Dordevic, La Cantoche Paname has become well known as an easy-going locale with a menu of exceptional quality, offering up a hip new take on the nostalgic “school lunch†experience we all knew and loved.

If you’re looking for a quick, no-fuss bite, les Ardoises (literally, chalkboards) offer a variety of meats, cheeses, patés and terrines that are ready to share and hover around a much appreciated 12€ mark. As for the appetizers, the P’tit Camembert Rôti (roasted Camembert) and the Oeufs cocotte au foie gras (baked eggs with foie gras), two French classics, are two great ways to start off your meal.

For the main dishes, the menu offers a variety of fish, meat and pasta, and there is no doubt you will find something to satisfy any of your big-kid, gourmand-needs for around 16€ a plate. The Fish Burger, one of the best, is made up of fresh breaded white fish, a white chive sauce and comes with crisp homemade fries and a salad. For those looking for something a bit more elegant, the Escalope de Saumon (salmon steak), cooked with lemongrass vapor, is often seen flying around the restaurant to various tables and is a fish-lover’s favorite in this place. Solid burgers, steaks and a tartare round out the menu with generous proportions.

At the bar side, some 25 different wines are served by the glass or bottle, and cocktails, both traditional and Cocktails “Les Maisons,†are served with some highlights being the Cantoche and the Paname. A personal favorite, an off-the-menu cocktail, is their version of the Long Island Iced Tea. Not very French, but it’s hands down the best Long Island out there, and if you’re feeling up to it, give it a shot.

Everyday from 18h to 20h is the Aperobic Happy Hour at La Cantoche, with cocktails and champagne at 6€ and half-pint beers at 2€. The restaurant also boasts the cheapest coffee in all of Paris at 0.90€ at the counter. A variety of Formules are available for lunch and Sunday’s are Brunch days.

With a young, energetic, friendly staff, a playful atmosphere and food taken very very seriously, La Cantoche Paname is a must for any local, newcomer or passerby in Paris, whether for drinks, a meal or the cheapest coffee in Paris. And keep in mind, if you’re especially good and well behaved, the staff might reward you with a Bon Point. Just like teacher did. One will buy you a coffee on your next visit, but collect a few and the prizes get a bit more interesting.
