Musee Marmottan -Monet Exhibition

Running from October 6, 2010-February 20, 2011, the Musee Marmottan-Monet exhibition will show for the first time its entire collection of 135 paintings, as well as the artist’s sketches and notebooks, on display. In the spirit of pride-and possible rivalry with the Grand Palais show-the retrospective is named Monet: Son Musee (translated as Monet: His Museum). Cn view are the personal works that Monet chose to keep in his family.

In 1966, the Musee Marmottan received a priceless endowment. Monet’s son Michel left more than one hundred canvases of his father’s works to the intimate museum, changing the name of and giving the Musee Marmottan-Monet the biggest single collection of Monet paintings in the world. These include The Impression Sunrise (1872), which was stolen from the museum in 1985 and later retrieved in Corsica. The name Impressionism-the most significant art movement of the nineteenth century-was inspired by this very painting.

This special exhibition will display many prized works of Monet not previously shown. Located at the beautiful Jardin du Ranelagh, the museum is a great venue, with typically short lines (if any) and can usually be visited quickly, if on a tight schedule.
