Pont Alexandre III

On any given day it can be a catwalk, a location for a photo shoot of Chanel models, a magical meeting place, a spot that takes your breath away and, oh yeah…a bridge.

The Pont Alexandre III is the most beautiful and ornate bridge crossing the Seine in Paris and it is a sight that cannot be missed. Started in 1897 and completed in 1900, Pont Alexandre III is the bridge that allows you to walk from the Grande Palais to the Invalides in style. Named after Russian Tsar Alexander III, the bridge contains both Russian and French symbols that work together to make it a truly diverse artistic creation.

At both ends of the bridge stand two colossal pillars adorned with a golden Pegasus and Fame that shine like beacons on even the cloudiest day. The detail of the bridge itself is exquisite and is what you would imagine seeing in an underwater palace. Almost as if it had risen from the sea, nautical images are prominently featured and the entire length the railing is decorated in golden seashells and garlands that look truly festive.

Bronze sculptures of cherubs encircle the lampposts and sea nymphs hold bunches of seaweed in their hands and dance around with fish and crabs at their feet. The art nouveau lampposts that line the length of the bridge are unmistakable and are works of art in their own right. Interestingly enough, the sculptures on the bridge were made by different artists so they all have their own personal style.

There is a reason that on most sunny days you can see newlyweds taking pictures on this bridge, as you cannot find a more romantic backdrop than this! If you  stand on the bridge and look across the sparkling Seine towards the Eiffel Tower, it is sure to give you a rush of excitement!

Walk across this bridge at least once while you are in Paris and if you can, linger a little. You might just get transported into your very own fairytale!
