Les Arts Décoratifs Exhibition – Louvre

Part II of the Arts Decoratifs’ temporary fashion exhibition showcases some of the most beautiful and fantastic creations of the recent past. Part I began with the year 1971, and the eagerly-awaited second installment begins in 1990 and ends only last year, in 2010.

The exhibition’s success lies in its diversity, showing not only the famous French fashion houses, but also an eclectic range of British designers, such as Vivienne Westwood and John Galliano. There are elegant pieces from Chanel and Lanvin, which will always evoke a truly Parisian style, and also some rather bizarre outfits such as a coat made from tinsel by the Maison Martin Margiela and a Jean Paul Gaultier dress with sleeves made from feathers. Belgian designer Veronique Branquinho has recently donated to the museum, so there is a small area dedicated to her work as well. A highly ornate dress by Alexander McQueen, who tragically died in February of last year, is one of the most popular items on display.

Throughout the exhibition, televisions project fashion shows. Each is worth watching as the catwalks of recent years were daring and adventurous, incorporating dance and theatre. Information cards written in both French and English provide interesting background details on the history of designers, fashion houses and individual outfits.

This exhibition is definitely worth visiting, especially since Paris’ main fashion museum, La Musée Galliera, is closed to the public for security work until Spring 2012. Located in a smaller wing of the Louvre, it can be a welcome break from the bustling crowds jostling to see the Mona Lisa.
