While swimming in the Seine may sound rather unappealing to most, for kids the idea may be supercool. The floating Pool Joséphine Baker offers such an experience as an innovative, modern use of precious little Parisian space. The entire facility is built on a giant barge that rests just in front of the Bibliothèque Nationale. Parents find a pristine, clean, affordable health club while children experience the thrill of water that floats on water.

Memberships can be specified to provide access to an array of activities. The featured floating pool is the larger of the two, both open year-round. Classes in aquatic fitness include aqua-biking and jogging, though the pool is open to free-swim for members when classes are not in session. Nearby, a wading pool with a waterfall umbrella safely welcomes children to float and play. In the summer, the pool’s glass roof opens to reveal a sun-deck that seats 300 people. The result: a place to bronzer and a gorgeous view of Parc de Bercy from across the Seine.

Recently opened in January 2010, the Espace Forme is furnished with the newest equipment and features fitness, strength training, and cardio classes. In a room with floor-to-ceiling windowed walls, watching the peaceful flow of the Seine brings tranquility to your training. Perhaps best yet, the piscine offers a Jacuzzi, two saunas, and a Turkish bath. Float, get fit, have fun!

Finally, there’s food, too. A cafeteria offers light, nutritious foods and beverages. Eat along the quay in a 500-meter space with tables and umbrellas. The meticulously attentive team at the Piscine Joséphine Baker notes the pool deck is protected at all times by a guardrail from the Seine and the air and water quality of the pool is constantly kept to sanitation standards. For those interested in learning more, the Piscine’s website is informative, clear, and well organized with photographs of the entire facility.
