Nicolas

The Nicolas wine merchant chain is as abundant on street corners as the local baker. One of the oldest wine merchants operating in Paris, Nicolas has been selling wines and spirits since 1822. Julia Child bought her wines from Nicolas, including prestigious vintages of Château d’Yquem, Château Margaux, Château Lafite Rothchild, and Château Haut-Brion.

With its distinctive red-colored exterior, Nicolas offers a reliable selection of French wines and champagnes at competitive prices. While not all Nicolas stores are the same – some offer a more extensive selection of wines, you can be guaranteed an excellent bottle of wine from one of France’s primary regions – Bordeaux, Bourgogne, Alsace, Côtes du Rhône, Languedoc-Roussillon, and the Loire.

Nicolas merchants are all knowledgeable about wines, and are more than happy to help you with questions. Even if I have an idea of which bottles to buy, I may select three or four and then ask the merchant which they recommend the most. Nicolas primarily stocks wines that are of relatively recent vintages, unless you visit its flagship store on Place de la Madeleine which also sells rare vintages. You can arrange for wines to be delivered (“livraisonâ€), and Nicolas also stocks top-quality wine glasses and wine corkscrews. Nicolas also has a good “fidelité†(loyalty) program so you can earn points redeemable for wines and other gifts.

More information about store locations and online purchases can be found here: http://www.nicolas.com/en/_ourstores.html. Nicolas flagship store is located on Place de La Madeleine and is open every day of the week except Sunday.
